Recycling your Annuals

Did you know you can 'over-winter' your potted annuals? These beauties looked a bit ragged, when I put them out in May. But now they are show stoppers! An added bonus: mature root systems make for big blooms!

If you have a window or sliding door that gets direct sunlight, you can pull your pots inside when the cold weather comes(don't forget to put drainage saucers, underneath).

Simply water *just enough* to keep the soil moist, and cut back the tops as the leaves start to drop. Yes, sometimes I have problems with aphids, inside, but not usually. My pots go in the basement where its cooler so I think that helps. If you encounter insect problems, use a non-toxic spray such as insecticidal soap, or a homemade version, to help control bugs.

Repot with fresh potting soil, if necessary, come Spring. I like Miracle Gro(in the blue bag) with the added 'slow-release fertilizer' and 'water-holding granules'. Helps keep the plants nice and healthy.

Put outside, around mid to late-May, when our overnight temps are stable(50 degrees). Remove the saucers so the water can drain away. Then watch 'em grow and enjoy--Cheers!
